Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, aiming to profit regardless of the outcome. This market, however, is driven by the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the result. Therefore, discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or risk assessments. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more competitive odds, especially when there's a strong consensus among traders, or when information not yet fully priced into sportsbook lines emerges.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or opinions. This dynamic pricing allows for a constantly updated assessment of the event’s likelihood.
