Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and internal analysis, while this market aggregates the opinions of many individual traders. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when public sentiment strongly favors one outcome. These differences can stem from varying levels of information or differing interpretations of available data. Examining both sources can provide a more comprehensive view of the expected outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where shares are bought and sold, adjusting the odds based on supply and demand. The price of a share representing a particular outcome reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the traders on the platform. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will climb. This creates a dynamic pricing system that continuously updates as new information becomes available and traders react to it.
