Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows individuals to express their own informed opinions, leading to odds that may diverge from traditional sources. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply a broader range of perspectives considered by prediction market participants. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than sportsbooks, particularly in response to breaking news or late-developing insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is entirely driven by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information and their own assessments of the event's likelihood. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to changing perceptions.
