Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market allows traders to directly assess the probability of an outcome. If a large number of traders believe a player has a higher chance of winning than implied by sportsbook odds, the price of shares representing that player will increase. This can create discrepancies between the two, showcasing the 'wisdom of the crowd' in action. It’s important to compare these odds when making your own assessment.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each player winning the Mazatlan tennis match. As more shares are purchased for a particular player, the price of those shares increases, reflecting growing confidence in their victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven entirely by supply and demand within the market, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of probabilities. This differs from fixed-odds betting, as the odds are constantly adjusting based on trader activity.
