Prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin regardless of the outcome. This market, however, is driven purely by the collective predictions of traders, potentially offering a more accurate assessment of probabilities. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply the wisdom of the crowd effect. It’s common to see this market diverge from sportsbook odds, particularly as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds continuously adjust based on the latest information and collective intelligence of the participants. The current price reflects the aggregated predictions of all traders on Polymarket.
