Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that the market perceives information differently or that arbitrage opportunities are present. It’s important to remember that both represent probabilities of an outcome, but are derived through distinct mechanisms.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of the event happening. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price fluctuates based on supply and demand; increased buying pressure drives the price up, signaling growing confidence in a particular outcome, while selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
