Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and to balance action, while this market is driven by individuals freely trading on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is underrating a player's chances, the price on Polymarket will adjust accordingly. This can sometimes lead to prediction markets being more accurate than sportsbooks, especially when there's strong public disagreement with the initial lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific player, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability of that player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven entirely by supply and demand within the Polymarket market, and the current price represents the market's collective assessment of the players’ chances.
