Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which may be influenced by house biases or differing information sources. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to varying levels of expertise, access to information, or simply differing interpretations of the same data. Comparing these odds can provide valuable insights into public perception and potential value opportunities for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. Conversely, increased selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood.
