Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a margin for profit, while this market allows anyone to trade and express their beliefs. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it may indicate that the market perceives information differently or that an opportunity for arbitrage exists. However, it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities of the same event and can be influenced by various factors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, constantly updating as new information becomes available.
