Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook odds due to varying information and incentives. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows traders to express their own beliefs about the outcome. If a significant difference emerges between this market and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that the crowd believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event. It's important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived through different mechanisms and influenced by different factors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a real-time probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price reflects the collective judgment of all participants, and changes as new information becomes available or sentiment shifts. The market's liquidity, currently at $7, also influences price discovery.
