Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a margin for profit. This market, driven by individual traders on Polymarket, may reveal different perspectives and potentially identify discrepancies in perceived probabilities. If a significant difference exists, it could suggest that the market believes a sportsbook has mispriced the event, or vice versa. It’s common to see prediction markets converge towards the true outcome as more information becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event’s likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and isn’t influenced by external factors or pre-defined formulas. This dynamic pricing allows for a fluid and responsive market.
