Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a margin for profit. This market, however, is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. If a significant number of users believe an outcome is more likely than sportsbooks suggest, the odds on Polymarket will adjust accordingly, potentially offering value to informed bettors. It’s common to see discrepancies, particularly before a large influx of betting activity.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants. The current price reflects the aggregate assessment of all traders on the platform regarding the likelihood of each player winning.
