Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks may set lines based on power rankings and public perception, while this market aggregates the insights of informed traders. If sportsbook odds initially favor one competitor significantly, but volume in this market indicates a more balanced expectation, that suggests a divergence in opinion. It's common to see prediction markets correct earlier than sportsbooks as new information becomes available, potentially offering more accurate probabilities as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is driven entirely by supply and demand, meaning that strong conviction from traders will move the price more significantly than indecision.
