Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, factoring in a margin, while this market allows participants to directly assess probabilities. If there's a significant discrepancy between the implied probability on Polymarket and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that the market believes the sportsbook is mispricing the event. However, sportsbooks have access to different information, such as injury reports and team news, which can influence their lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust to reflect the evolving consensus. The market's depth, indicated by the buy and sell orders, provides insight into the strength of conviction behind each possible result. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new developments.
