Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an outcome as assessed by traders. Therefore, you may find discrepancies between the two. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform sportsbooks in accuracy, as traders have a direct financial stake in correctly forecasting the result. Analyzing both can provide a more comprehensive view of potential outcomes for this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd, making it a dynamic and responsive indicator of expectations. Volume and order book depth also influence price discovery in this market.
