Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and their own risk assessment, while this market aggregates insights from individuals with varying levels of expertise. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when public perception diverges from expert analysis. These differences can create opportunities for arbitrage, as traders attempt to capitalize on mispricings between the two types of markets. The efficiency of this market can lead to odds that are highly predictive of the actual outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the estimated probability of that outcome occurring, allowing traders to express their views and profit if their predictions prove accurate. The market dynamically adjusts to new information and changing sentiment, providing a real-time assessment of the event’s potential results.
