Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, and can sometimes differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individual traders’ beliefs. It’s common to see discrepancies, particularly before significant events or when new information emerges. Analyzing these differences can provide valuable insights into public perception and potential value opportunities. The efficiency of this market means odds typically converge closer to the event’s outcome as more information becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where shares are bought and sold, adjusting the implied probability of each outcome. The price of a share representing a particular outcome reflects the market’s belief in its likelihood. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market is entirely driven by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the price beyond trader activity. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing environment.
