Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven by traders directly expressing their beliefs about the outcome. It’s common to see prediction market probabilities adjust more dynamically as new information emerges, potentially reacting faster to news or shifts in public opinion than traditional sportsbooks. Examining the difference can reveal where the crowd disagrees with professional oddsmakers.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
