Prediction market odds often offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market reflects the aggregate wisdom of many individual bettors. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early on, as prediction markets can quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities. Analyzing these differences can be valuable for identifying potential value bets, though it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities of the same event occurring. Comparing to polls and analysts’ predictions can also offer further insight.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective prediction. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand, meaning that significant trading activity or new information can cause rapid shifts in the odds. This dynamic pricing allows for a real-time assessment of expectations.
