Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows individuals to express their beliefs, which can lead to odds that diverge from traditional bookmakers, particularly as new information emerges. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate information more quickly than sportsbooks, as traders continuously update their assessments based on the latest news and analysis. This can result in a more accurate reflection of the true probability of an outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the collective intelligence of those participating, and can change rapidly based on new information or shifts in sentiment. The current price indicates what traders are willing to pay for a unit of outcome.
