Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by a small team of experts, while this market aggregates opinions from many individuals. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. These differences can arise from varying levels of information access, analytical approaches, or simply differing opinions on the likelihood of various outcomes. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view of the expected result.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts accordingly, providing a real-time assessment of the event's likelihood. The market's efficiency depends on the volume of trading and the diversity of opinions represented among the traders.
