Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different type of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin, and may be influenced by promotional considerations. This market, however, is driven by the collective predictions of traders who have 'skin in the game'. As a result, prediction market prices can sometimes be more accurate, especially when accounting for information not readily available to the general public. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions on player form, potential injuries, or strategic approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will rise, and vice versa. This creates a dynamic pricing system that reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd. The current price reflects the aggregated predictions of all traders on the platform.
