Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those offered by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the event's likelihood. It’s common to find that prediction markets are more accurate than traditional polls or analyst predictions, but comparing them to sportsbook odds can offer a broader perspective on the perceived probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event’s potential results, driven by informed traders.
