Often, prediction market odds can differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. This can be due to various factors, including differing opinions on the likely outcome, the influence of information available to traders versus bookmakers, and the dynamics of supply and demand within the prediction market itself. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, while prediction markets reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges that affects the perceived probability of an outcome in this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adjust to incorporate new information and changing sentiment. The total volume traded provides insight into the market's activity and the level of confidence traders have in different possible results.
