Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd assessment, often differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks incorporate a profit margin into their odds, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. If a significant discrepancy exists between the implied probability on Polymarket and sportsbook offerings, it could indicate that the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event. However, it’s important to remember that both represent different forms of opinion and are subject to their own biases and information sets. These differences can be useful for identifying potential value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the market's collective probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price adjusts accordingly, providing a dynamic and real-time estimate of the event's likelihood. This differs from fixed-odds betting, as the odds are not set by a bookmaker but rather by the collective actions of market participants.
