Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the views of many individuals with varying levels of knowledge. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or risk assessments. If significant differences emerge, arbitrage opportunities may present themselves, where traders can profit by exploiting the price variations between the two. However, it's important to remember that both represent probabilities of an outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand, reflecting the collective intelligence of the participants. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated based on new information and changing sentiment.
