Typically, prediction market odds offer a distinct perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, aiming to profit regardless of the outcome. This market, however, represents the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the result. Therefore, the implied probabilities from Polymarket may differ from those found at sportsbooks, potentially offering a more efficient assessment of the likely winner. It's common to see discrepancies, particularly as new information emerges and public sentiment shifts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. The market dynamically adjusts as traders react to news, analysis, and each other's actions, creating a constantly evolving prediction.
