Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the aggregated predictions of informed traders. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. If sportsbook odds heavily favor one competitor, but this market shows a more balanced probability distribution, it could signal that prediction market participants believe the sportsbook is mispricing the event. Analyzing these differences can offer valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand, reflecting the collective intelligence of the participants. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
