Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own research and beliefs. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of betting activity occurs. Comparing the odds can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making, but remember that each represents a unique assessment of probability.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market efficiently incorporates new information as it becomes available, reflecting the evolving expectations of the crowd. This dynamic pricing allows for a real-time assessment of the likelihood of each possible result.
