Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their risk and ensure profit, while this market allows traders to express their own informed opinions. Initial sportsbook odds may be influenced by factors like public perception or promotional efforts, whereas this market's pricing is driven purely by speculation and information exchange among participants. Over time, the odds on Polymarket may converge with sportsbook odds as new information emerges, but often discrepancies remain, presenting potential value for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand, meaning it’s a direct expression of collective prediction. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
