Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can take the opposite position in this market, driving the price towards what they perceive as the true probability. It's common to see prediction market prices move independently as new information emerges and public sentiment evolves.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price fluctuates based on supply and demand; if more people buy shares representing a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants, providing a real-time assessment of the event’s potential results.
