Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and often incorporate a margin for profit, while this market allows participants to directly express their beliefs about the probability of each outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, opportunities for arbitrage may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both platforms. However, it’s important to note that prediction markets often incorporate information and analysis faster than sportsbooks, leading to more efficient pricing.
On Kalshi, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, meaning traders buy and sell contracts representing each possible outcome—in this case, either Louisville or NC State winning the 3rd quarter. The price of each contract reflects the market’s collective probability assessment of that outcome. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust accordingly. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more a particular outcome is favored, the higher the price of its corresponding contract will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing mechanism ensures that the market reflects the latest insights.
