Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Kalshi, often reflect a different kind of wisdom than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while prediction markets are driven by the collective intelligence of traders who are incentivized to be accurate. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when public sentiment strongly diverges from expert analysis. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on team statistics, this market incorporates real-time information and changing perceptions as the game approaches. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to reflect new information.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi can differ due to several factors. Each platform has its own user base with varying levels of expertise and information. Trading volume also plays a role; higher volume generally leads to more efficient price discovery. Additionally, the specific market design on each platform—such as the available contract types or fee structures—can influence trading behavior. Finally, differing risk appetites among traders on each platform can contribute to price discrepancies. These factors combine to create potentially different probabilities for the same event across the two venues.
