Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance betting action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to directly express their beliefs about the outcome. If there’s a significant discrepancy, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both venues. It's common to see prediction markets move more quickly to incorporate new information and adjust probabilities based on collective insight, potentially leading to more accurate forecasts than those offered by sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing each possible outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price is determined by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on their own analysis and information. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
