Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and attempt to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when public sentiment strongly deviates from the sportsbook's initial assessment. It’s common to see prediction markets more accurately forecast probabilities as more information becomes available, though sportsbook odds may offer value depending on the specific event and timing. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise for informed betting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each exact score. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices adjust to reflect the collective wisdom. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome will drive up its price, indicating increased confidence in that result. The market's depth and volume provide insights into the strength of these beliefs.
