Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially incorporating information not immediately available to sportsbooks. This can lead to differences between the implied probabilities on Polymarket and those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis and team statistics, while this market evolves as new information and opinions emerge from traders. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to breaking news or shifts in public sentiment than sportsbooks do.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means that as more traders believe a particular outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. The market efficiently aggregates information and adjusts probabilities based on supply and demand for these shares.
