Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and internal analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when public opinion diverges from expert analysis. Examining these differences can be valuable for informed decision-making, though it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities, not guarantees.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a real-time probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome will occur, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will rise. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust its predictions accordingly, reflecting the aggregated insights of all participants.
