Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which are set by professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public betting percentages and risk management strategies, while this market relies on individuals' informed predictions. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Examining these differences can offer insights into where the crowd believes value lies compared to traditional betting venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts, providing a dynamic assessment of the event's likelihood. This creates a market-driven probability assessment, distinct from static odds offered elsewhere.
