Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Predict, often reflect a different kind of wisdom than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while prediction markets are driven by individuals wagering their own capital, theoretically leading to more accurate probabilities. This market's implied probability may differ from those offered by sportsbooks due to varying information sources and the incentive structures of each. It’s possible to find discrepancies, especially when public sentiment strongly favors one outcome, as prediction markets can be more sensitive to collective intelligence than bookmakers.
Prices on Polymarket and Predict can diverge for several reasons. Polymarket and Predict can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform attracts a different user base with varying levels of expertise and access to information regarding the college basketball game. Trading volume also plays a role; lower volume on one platform can lead to greater price fluctuations. Furthermore, the specific mechanisms for trading and market-making differ between Polymarket and Predict, influencing how quickly and efficiently information is incorporated into the price. These factors contribute to the possibility of differing probabilities for the same event across the two platforms.
