Prediction markets and sportsbooks price events differently because they operate under distinct incentive structures. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their book and lock in profit margins, while prediction markets rely on traders' direct financial stakes to reveal true probability estimates. This market often reflects sharper, less biased forecasts because participants profit by being accurate rather than by volume. However, sportsbook odds may move faster during major news events due to higher liquidity. Comparing both sources provides a fuller picture of where informed opinion stands on the championship outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that adjusts odds continuously based on trader activity and order flow. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Prices range from near-zero for unlikely outcomes to close to 100 for favorites, with each point representing an implied probability. As traders buy or sell shares in a team's victory, the price moves to reflect updated consensus. The spread between bid and ask prices tightens during high-volume periods, making it cheaper to enter or exit positions when interest peaks.
Major roster changes, player injuries, or trades can shift odds significantly as team strength is reassessed. Playoff bracket seeding and matchup draws influence perceived championship odds, especially if a top contender faces an unexpectedly difficult path. Regular season performance and head-to-head records between rivals provide real-time data that traders incorporate immediately. Coaching changes, internal team drama, or public statements from players also ripple through the market. As the tournament approaches and begins, each match result narrows uncertainty and can trigger sharp repricing of remaining contenders.
