Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own analysis and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their view, leading to a potentially more accurate assessment of probabilities. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges, as the crowd incorporates diverse perspectives into the pricing of this market. Examining these differences can reveal valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is driven by supply and demand, meaning increased buying pressure will raise the price, indicating a higher perceived chance of that outcome, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information.
