Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and risk assessment, this market allows anyone to participate in setting the probabilities. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the collective insight of prediction market traders. It's common to see prediction markets react quickly to new information, potentially leading to odds movements that differ from those found at sportsbooks. Examining both can offer a more comprehensive view of potential outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and is a dynamic representation of collective predictions. This allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
