Comparing prediction market odds to those offered by sportsbooks reveals how collective intelligence differs from traditional oddsmaking. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market reflects the aggregated beliefs of a diverse group of traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the wisdom of the crowd identifying undervalued or overvalued outcomes. Significant differences between the two may present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders can profit by exploiting price inefficiencies.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The current price reflects the combined judgment of all participants on Polymarket.
