Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by a small number of experts, while this market aggregates insights from many participants. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially when there’s significant public interest or disagreement about the likely outcome. Examining these differences can be valuable for informed decision-making, though it's important to remember that both represent probabilities based on different methodologies.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, reflecting the aggregated predictions of its users. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
