Comparing prediction market odds to those offered by sportsbooks reveals how public sentiment differs from professional oddsmakers. Often, prediction markets can offer a more accurate forecast, as they aggregate the wisdom of the crowd. If sportsbook odds heavily favor one team, but this market shows a more balanced distribution of probability, it suggests the crowd believes the outcome is less certain. Discrepancies can arise from differing information access or biases present in each system. Examining these differences can provide valuable insights into the potential for value in either market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a growing expectation of its likelihood. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
