Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin. This market, however, is driven purely by traders' willingness to buy or sell, theoretically leading to more efficient price discovery. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, risk assessments, or simply variations in the participant pool. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than sportsbooks, especially when public sentiment shifts significantly.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd, and is constantly updated based on supply and demand. Currently, the most likely outcome, according to the market, has a probability of 100.0%.
