Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an outcome as assessed by traders. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. Analyzing these differences can be insightful, as prediction markets sometimes aggregate information more efficiently and can be less susceptible to biases found in sportsbook lines. This market is no exception, and observing the contrast can be valuable.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants on Polymarket, and changes based on supply and demand for shares in this market.
