Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, incorporating a margin. Prediction markets, conversely, are driven by the collective opinions of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. This can lead to more efficient pricing, particularly as the event approaches and more information is incorporated. However, factors like liquidity and platform-specific user bases can also create discrepancies between the two.
Prices for the Kansas-West Virginia game may vary between Polymarket and Kalshi due to several factors. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform has a different user base with varying levels of expertise and information, leading to differing interpretations of the same data. Trading volume also plays a role; lower volume on one platform can result in wider bid-ask spreads and less accurate pricing. These differences highlight the value of aggregating data across multiple platforms.
