Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply a larger and more diverse pool of bettors participating in the prediction market. If significant differences exist, it may suggest that market participants believe the sportsbook’s odds are miscalibrated, or vice versa, offering potential value to informed bettors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the collective judgment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event’s likelihood. This differs from fixed-odds betting, as the odds adjust with every trade.
