Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the event. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than sportsbooks, potentially offering an edge to informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, ultimately reflecting the market’s consensus forecast. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This means that the price of a 'yes' share, for example, indicates the probability that the outcome will occur, as perceived by the traders on Polymarket. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will climb.
